Engineering 3D Modeling in Construction and Industry
Many people don’t fully understand the relevance and extensive applications of 3D modeling for industry, manufacturing, construction, and architecture. What is 3D modeling used for? It’s the most precise and rapid way for an engineer, designer, or architect to create a 3D model of industrial equipment or heritage sites.
After measurements are taken with a modern FARO S150 laser scanner, 3D modeling is performed in software like Archicad, 3DMax, or Revit to create a BIM model—a digital twin of the real object. This model enables builders and architects (AEC professionals) to plan, construct, renovate, and operate buildings and structures, as well as architectural and industrial objects, more effectively.
A BIM model can have varying levels of detail (LOD). There are five levels of BIM model detail: LOD100, LOD200, LOD300, LOD400, and LOD500. According to the E203-2013 protocol (latest version), developed by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the level of detail specifies the nominal amount of model data required to carry out planned tasks.
About 3D modeling and 3D models
3D modeling is used in various situations when it is required to obtain the most accurate data and as quickly as possible:
When planning repairs
In preparation for reconstruction
When you need to assess the technical condition of real estate during its purchase or sale
When checking the accuracy of the work of builders at any stage
When it is planned to change the floor plan and transfer any structures
When dividing new premises
With the legal division of real estate
Applications of 3D Modeling
3D modeling is relevant for:
- Designing metal structures and industrial networks
- Preparing for construction, reconstruction, or repair of buildings and structures
- Restoration and preservation of historical heritage sites
- Visualization of design and architectural projects
- Placement and connection of industrial equipment to networks
- Restoration of project documents and equipment inventory
- Creating digital copies of building facade elements, stucco, decorations, etc.
- Dividing premises and legal division of real estate
- Quality control of work performed by construction organizations and other tasks
Stages of 3D Modeling
- Preparatory Stage: Based on the client’s technical specifications, a work plan is developed, deadlines are agreed upon, and the cost of the service is determined.
- Measurements: Obtaining the necessary data to create a digital model of the object (laser scanning).
- Final Stage: Providing the client with a digital copy of the object in the format specified in the technical specifications.
3D Modeling in Practice
For designers, 3D modeling is currently the most accurate automated method to obtain volumetric digital data for construction and renovation. We create models of facades, buildings, and industrial objects. The resulting point cloud and 3D model are an accurate digital representation of reality. Digital Twin. Laser Scanning and 3D Modeling
Design and Architectural Studios Use 3D Models for Project Visualization
Design and architectural studios use 3D models to visualize their projects, utilizing the actual dimensions of spaces (taking into account all irregularities and slopes of walls and floors, non-right angles, etc.). Scanning decor (stucco).
Equally Important and Significant is Scanning and Modeling in Industry
A 3D model of a space allows for the rational and error-free placement of equipment, the design of networks, and a 3D model of equipment enables the creation of a project for the reconstruction or modification of individual blocks of the equipment itself. Stages of work
First stage
Preparatory, when a specialist receives a technical assignment. At this stage, a work execution plan is prepared, the cost and time of work are determined.
Second phase
It consists in receiving data from the Customer about the object, which are necessary for the implementation of technical
Third stage
Processing of the received data. It includes the creation and provision of the customer with the result of work in the format specified in the terms of reference
